Patient safety is always our top priority. In most cases, each nurse cares for no more than three children at a time. We carefully consider each child’s medical needs and adjust assignments as needed to ensure safe, high-quality care. Occasionally, depending on acuity and staffing, a nurse may care for up to four children, but we always make decisions with safety and individualized care in mind.
Families may use the onsite toaster oven and microwave to heat food. Most families choose to bring pre-prepared meals that only require warming, such as refrigerated, frozen or canned items, or arrange for takeout.
AHK is intentionally designed with all patient rooms located in close proximity to one another and to the nurse's stations. This layout promotes continual visibility, rapid response times, and team collaboration, ensuring that staff are readily available to assist patients and one another whenever needed.
Respite care consists of short stays ranging from 48hrs up to 14 days per year. During these visits, our team assumes full responsibility for your child’s care, allowing you to time to take a vacation, attend important events, or simply enjoy some well-deserved rest.
Transitional care allows for longer stays of up to 120 days. The goal of transitional care is to provide comprehensive training and to ensure all necessary supports are in place before discharge – including services such as private duty nursing and other homebased resources. The length of stay is directly related to how frequently caregivers participate in on-site training and demonstrate readiness for independent care at home.
At our Naperville and Chicago locations, overnight stays are not routinely offered, as most patient rooms are semi-private. However, once caregiver training is completed, we require two 24-hour stays during which caregivers independently provide care. During these required stays, we make every effort to arrange private accommodations whenever possible to support comfort and privacy.
